Gentle Chiropractic Care and Cranial Therapy for Children, Adolescents and Infants

Arn Strasser DC

Keeping your child healthy is one of parenting's greatest challenges. Even more daunting, is finding the right care when your child is ill or has an injury. For over 20 years, I have made treating children and adolescents a central concern of my practice. Here is what I tell parents when they ask me: What is the role of chiropractic in maintaining the health of their child or adolescent?

In answering this question, I think it is helpful to define two different health challenges faced by children (and everyone else): functional disorders and organic disease.

All children should have a children's chiropractor to care for functional disorders, which are disturbances in the body's function. Functional disorders are not frank disease, but it is important to address them to insure a healthy child. Neck and back pain, sports injuries, almost all headaches, chronic colds and lowered resistance, fatigue, ADD, hyperactivity, irritability, digestive upset, and many other imbalances experienced by children are disorders of function effectively treated with natural drugless care.

If your child is facing an organic disease, such as a bacterial infection, a medical pediatrician is the doctor of choice. Medicine's wonderful contribution to health is in the diagnosis and treatment of organic disease. All of us, at some point, need drug therapy and some of us will need surgery. All parents should have a medical pediatrician to monitor their children's development and to be available to examine for organic problems.

Non-organic disorders are not medicine's strong area and are appropriately managed by a doctor of chiropractic who utilizes natural, gentle procedures to help the body heal without drugs.

Statistics and research now tell us that, to an alarming degree, children and adolescents are being treated with drug therapy for functional disorders. Not only are the side-effects of these medications of great concern, but also treating symptoms of functional disorders fails to address the imbalances fails to treat their cause.

Throughout childhood and adolescence the body gives us invaluable signals of imbalances that require correction. If a child falls and injuries her neck, the body gives pain signals from the mechanical problem caused by the fall. Depending on drug therapy to resolve the pain does not address the cause of the injury.

We teach our children a valuable lesson about health when we utilize a children's chiropractor. . In my practice, I try to help my young patients see that health is more than pills from a prescription bottle. I listen to them. I emphasize a positive approach that sees pain as an important response of a healthy body. I try to steer away from medical labels that might frighten or stigmatize a child. I engage them in a program of active care.

In my practice, my child and adolescent patients enjoy chiropractic care. They appreciate a gentle hands-on approach and they seem to understand natural health on an instinctive level.

I use non-force and gentle chiropractic, cranial, and manual techniques in treating children, augmented by botanicals and therapeutic supplements. The wonderful part of treating children is that they respond far more rapidly to treatment than we do.

I think there is something else that is valuable for children in my practice. We provide an unhurried atmosphere to allows the child or adolescent to develop a relationship with a doctor who emphasizes prevention and natural approaches to keeping healthy.

Children benefit from gentle chiropractic care not only when they're sick or injured, but also on some reasonable basis when they're well. I recommend that my patients view my services as they would a dentist. Once a year, or if there have been problems perhaps once a season, having a child or adolescent see me to check for proper spinal motion and balance, and to add a few words about eating well, preventing injuries, maintaining good posture habits and, of course, heavy backpacks. These visits can be a valuable tool in the most important concept in children's health: prevention.
